David Beckham is looking to lure a Barcelona superstar to Miami in 2020, while Man Utd could be back in for an Arsenal playmaker in January, according to Sunday’s newspapers.
INTER MIAMI LOOKING TO LURE MESSI IN 2020
David Beckham and his new MLS team Inter Miami are reported to be planning a spectacular swoop for Lionel Messi for their debut season in 2020.
Beckham’s high-profile club have been linked with a number of big-name players, although executives at several MLS clubs said last week they were convinced Inter will bid to make the biggest statement possible and land Messi – as reported in the Mail on Sunday.
The Argentine’s contract at Barcelona runs until the end of the 2020-21 season but the playmaker, who will turn 33 the previous summer, and the Catalan giants may be tempted if Miami submit a mammoth offer.
A source close to Beckham’s club said that no contact has yet been made with Messi, or any other potential targets, but admitted that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would be the obvious big-name signing if he could be tempted away.
Messi has said in the past that he would prefer to end his career at the Nou Camp and it is unlikely that he would choose to move to any other top-flight European club, if indeed he does decide on a new challenge.
It has been claimed in the past that he might make a sentimental return to club football in Argentina but the possibility of playing for Beckham in Miami, where there is a 70 per cent Latino population, could well have a greater appeal.
