Dutchman says no

Liverpool and Chelsea have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij.

According to reports from the Birmingham Mail, the former Feyenoord man has rejected a new deal at the Roman club.

The Reds have been credited with interest in the young centre-half following the Virgil van Dijk fiasco and are looking to strike a deal in the next few weeks.

The report states that De Vrij has stated that he “isn’t willing to sign a new contract with the Italian club” and has “made his intentions clear of an exit”.

Lazio reportedly value the 24-year-old at £30million, and have reportedly already rejected an earlier  £17million bid.

Chris Smalling: Wants improvement from United

Manchester United will seal the £31m signing of Victor Lindelof this week as he arrives from Portuguese club Benfica.

The 22-year-old Sweden international will join the Red Devils on a “long-term deal” after months of speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford.

According to the Daily Star, this spells bad news for Chris Smalling, who will no longer be required by Jose Mourinho.

They report that the Portuguese boss has decided Smalling is surplus to requirements, and that he will be sold to the highest bidder this summer.

Smalling joined United from Fulham in 2010, winning two Premier League titles and making over 250 appearances for the club.
