Paper Talk: Details of Arsenal and Chelsea overhauls

Arsenal and Chelsea could both sign strikers from Serie A this summer as they prepare for squad overhauls, while Manchester United could move for Isco.

Arsenal are watching Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi, according to the Daily Mirror, ahead of a summer in which Arsene Wenger wants to strengthen all areas of his squad.

The Frenchman is said to want a new back-up goalkeeper, a centre-half, a midfielder and a striker, with a focus on youth as Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky prepare to leave.

The Gunners are said to have checked out Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez, 20, and are confident of landing Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka , 23, while Wenger may bid for one or both of Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, 19, and Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon, 15, who both play at left-back.

It was reported over the weekend that Arsenal would be willing to pay what it takes to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich should he express an interest to leave this summer, but a more realistic target may be Icardi, who has also apparently been scouted by Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

The 23-year-old is apparently looking likely to leave Inter this summer and could be available for around £25million having scored 15 goals in 32 games in Serie A this season.

Wenger has also looked at Juventus striker Alvaro Morata, 23, who is a long-standing target.

Antonio Conte is confident of completing a £45million deal for Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

Higuain has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal and Manchester United also mentioned as potential suitors for the Argentina striker, but Chelsea are said to be hopeful of fighting off any competition having already made discreet enquiries.

Higuain, 28, has scored 32 goals in 33 appearances in Serie A this season and could allow Diego Costa to leave Stamford Bridge should he make the move. Costa has interest from at least three different clubs in China, with offers believed to be in excess of £250,000 a week. Atletico Madrid are also interested in re-signing the Spain forward.

Chelsea also believe they will land Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan this summer, the newspaper adds, as Conte prepares to completely overhaul his squad.

Antonio Rüdiger, on loan at Roma from Stuttgart, has also been looked at, but the Blues’ hopes of signing Kostas Manolas are apparently in the balance as Roma will have to pay the defender’s former club Olympiacos a huge sell-on fee if he leaves the Stadio Olimpico this summer.
