Shane Long: Liverpool enquire about Southampton striker

Liverpool have apparently had an enquiry for Shane Long knocked back by Southampton, while Manchester City could make an offer for Reece Oxford.

Liverpool have made an enquiry about Southampton striker Shane Long, according to the Daily Mirror.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to bolster his injury-hit frontline – he again used Steven Caulker as a striker against Manchester United on Sunday – and was plotting an £8million move for Long, it was claimed.

Saints, however, are said to be determined to keep the 28-year-old, even after signing Charlie Austin from QPR, though Graziano Pelle has only 18 months remaining on his contract and could join Juventus with the south-coast club stalling on a new contract offer for the Italy international.

Speaking after Austin’s arrival, Saints chairman Ralph Krueger said: “Players coming in and out of here in the last two weeks of the transfer window is not in the plan. I would never say never on either direction because it’s the nature of the sport; you don’t know what opportunities present themselves.”

Manchester City are considering making an offer for West Ham youngster Reece Oxford, according to The Sun.

City scouts are said to have watched Oxford, who can play in central defence or midfield, in his last three appearances for West Ham’s Under-21 side as they look to add more home-grown talent to their squad.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are also thought to be monitoring the 17-year-old’s progress, the newspaper adds, but Hammers boss Slaven Bilic is desperate to keep hold of a player that has two and a half years left on his contract.

West Ham do, however, want to loan him out for the rest of the season, with Fulham apparently among the Championship clubs interested.
