Paper Talk: Robben, Griezmann and £15m Vardy

Manchester United will move for Arjen Robben and bid £15million for Jamie Vardy, while Chelsea want Antoine Griezmann, according to Sunday’s papers.

Manchester United are monitoring Arjen Robben’s situation at Bayern Munich, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 31-year-old is apparently ‘at war’ with team-mate Robert Lewandowski; therefore he is heading for a reunion with United boss Louis van Gaal, whom he worked with at Bayern and the Dutch national side.

Lewandowski has claimed he prefers to play with Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman because Robben is too ‘selfish’ – a fact which has irked Robben and now he wants to leave.

A likely story indeed.

The Daily Star on Sunday has a exclusive on their back page claiming ‘Manchester United have switched their search for an English striker to Leicester’s Jamie Vardy’.

Their headline is ‘Vardy party’ – we’re not sure either, but apparently Louis van Gaal wants the 28-year-old, who the they say is ‘now worth at least £15million’.

The former Fleetwood man has scored in nine consecutive Premier League games and is the league’s top goalscorer and that has alerted several of the country’s top sides with Tottenham and Liverpool reportedly interested in him.

The tabloid goes on to tell us that United scouts have watched Leicester’s last two games against Watford and West Brom, which initially sounds like Van Gaal could have an interest in the England frontman, until you look at the fixture list and find that United’s last game was against WBA and the next fixture is away at Watford.

Surely United’s scouts were not checking out the opposition?

Leicester’s game with WBA came a week before United defeated them at Old Trafford and Van Gaal’s next fixture is the trip to Watford on Saturday. So it just so happens that United’s last and next opponents were the same as Leicester’s last two opponents – therefore they must have been watching Vardy, not.

Another exclusive, this time from the Sunday Express claims that Chelsea are ready to spend £40million on Antoine Griezmann.

It’s a link that has been doing the rounds since the summer transfer window and the Express in fact carried the story on August 15 (see below) without the ‘exclusive’ label.

Jose Mourinho is believed to be keen on the Athletico Madrid forward and the good thing for the Chelsea boss is that his value has gone down £6million from £46million to £40million – a bargain buy.

According to other reports on Sunday, Mourinho wants to send loanee Radamel Falcao back to Monaco (Sun) and is prepared to sell Diego Costa in January, so Chelsea will be in the market for two new strikers (Mirror).
