Paper Talk: Everton target Porto captain, London rivals in Gomes battle

Tottenham will reportedly do battle with West Ham for a Barcelona star in January, while Everton are ready to make a move for a Porto defender, according to Thursday’s newspapers.

Everton are reportedly lining up a January move for Porto’s Spanish defender Ivan Marcano.

The 30-year-old is out of contract next summer and is able to talk to clubs over a free transfer move from January.

The Daily Mail claims that the Toffees sent scouts to watch the Porto captain in action last month and that boss Ronald Koeman is keen on bringing in the versatile star.

Marcano, a former Spain Under-21 international, can play at left-back or centre-back and could have moved to Goodison Park last month but Porto priced him out a switch.

Tottenham are reportedly set to renew their interest in Barcelona’s Andre Gomes in January but will face competition for his services.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino had been hoping to land the midfielder on loan on deadline day but the deal fell through after Barca pulled the plug as they could not find a suitable replacement.

The 24-year-old is, however, still expected to quit the Nou Camp in January after failing to secure a regular starting spot following his £50million move from Valencia last summer. When he did feature it was often out of position at right-back.

The Daily Star claims that Spurs will be back in for the Portugal star in the New Year but that West Ham will rival them for Gomes.

The Hammers had a frustrating summer window and failed to land top target William Carvalho after a deal fell through with his club Sporting Lisbon.

Slaven Bilic’s men are now being tipped to switch targets to Carvalho’s compatriot Gomes in what could become a straight fight between London rivals to land the midfielder.
