Sam Byram, Jetro Willems and Jose Luis Gaya linked with transfers

Liverpool will battle Manchester United for Jetro Willems and also want Sam Byram, while Chelsea could meet Jose Luis Gaya’s release clause.

Manchester United are reportedly locked in a battle with rivals Liverpool to sign PSV star Jetro Willems.

Reports in Metro claim the Premier League giants are ready to go head-to-head to land the Dutch defender.

The player could be available for a knockdown £8million price in January after he failed to agree a new contract with PSV.

The 21-year-old is rated as one of the hottest properties in Dutch football.

Left-back Willems could act as a replacement for crocked Manchester United defender Luke Shaw, or challenge Alberto Moreno and Joe Gomez for a starting spot at Liverpool.

A move to Old Trafford would see the player link up with former club pal and international team-mate Memphis.

Liverpool could launch a winter swoop for Leeds star Sam Byram, according to the Daily Express.

The Whites Academy star is out of contract at the end of the season and, having so far failed to agree a new deal, may be sold by the Whites in the January transfer window to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

The player was linked with Swansea earlier this week, with reports suggesting Garry Monk’s side are preparing an £8million offer.

Liverpool’s neighbours Everton are also understood to be looking at the player, along with Southampton and Arsenal.

Byram – who can operate in defence or midfield – has been in poor form for the Whites this season and Leeds boss Uwe Rosler admitted the player has been affected by the speculation over his future.

Chelsea have reportedly stepped up their interest in Valencia defender Jose Luis Gaya, 20, and are considering paying his release clause of £36.6million.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bolster his defensive options this winter as his side have struggled to keep clean sheets so far this season, conceding 12 goals in their five matches.

Highly-rated left back Gaya, who Chelsea were said to be monitoring in the summer window, has been identified as a possible target.

And Spanish outlet Fichajes report that the Premier League champions are seriously considering launching an offer for Gaya, despite the fact that his buy-out clause is around £36.6million.

The Daily Express also reports the player is wanted by Manchester United as a possible replacement for Luke Shaw, but seem less willing to meet his release clause.
