Partey highlights two games he has excelled in; Arteta hints at revenge

Thomas Partey TEAMtalk

Thomas Partey believes he has only shown his true potential in two Arsenal games so far after his arrival from Atletico Madrid last summer.

Partey had long since been linked with the Gunners and they finally got their hands on the midfielder on deadline day last October.

The Gunners finally agreed to pay the player’s £45.3m release clause after going straight to LaLiga with their offer. Atletico were understood to be furious after not being told and were helpless to stop the transfer once the buyout had been triggered.

Partey, 27, has shown flashes of brilliance, but says there is plenty more to come now he is adapting to life with the club.

The former Mallorca man has made 16 appearances this season, including 10 starts in the Premier League. And he picked out the games against Man Utd and Wolves as his best to date.

“Yeah I had a few games. I think against United and against Wolves also I was able to show what I can do. Due to less games and less training I have to keep training and keep working to get back to that level,” said Partey.

The Ghana midfielder has also been hit by a number of injuries which have stopped his season getting into full flow.

“Yes it was a difficult moment to get used to how the team play and I think the injuries are part of the adaptation and now I feel good.

Granit Xhaka mistake can happen says coach

Granit Xhaka mistake can happen says coach

Mikel Arteta says Granit Xhaka's mistake which resulted in Burnley scoring an equaliser can happen due to his side's style of play, as Arsenal drew 1-1 at Turf Moor.

“I think this is just the start. I’m starting to get used to how my mates play and how the Premier League goes. With time everything will be good,” said Partey.

Arsenal face Olympiakos in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 on Thursday and Partey wants glory in the competition, just as he managed with Atletico in 2017/18.

Arteta: ‘We have some feeling towards’ Olympiakos

“I think it’s very important to the club and to the supporters. This club belongs to the Champions League and we have to do our best to get to where we want,” he added.

Arsenal were knocked out of the same competition on away goals by the Greek side in the Round of 32 last season. And Mikel Arteta has admitted revenge could be in the air.

Arteta said: “Well obviously it was a really tough one to swallow. The way it happened at the end was really cruel. Obviously we have some feeling towards that team.

I think we are a better team than last year. Looking back at the way we played and the way we are playing now we’ve come a long way.”

Emile Smith Rowe could return after missing the Burnley game with a muscle problem.

“He’s close to retuning he’s going to have a full session today to see if he’s ready to be involved tomorrow. We will see where we are with him.”
