Leeds United star ‘knows where his future lies’ amid exit talk

Patrick Bamford very much knows his future remains at Elland Road, despite reported interest in the Leeds United striker’s services from a Premier League rival.

Bamford has been in great form for Leeds so far this season. He has banged in 14 goals and weighed in with six assists in 29 games. Indeed, he can consider himself very unfortunate not to make the England squad last week, as Marcelo Bielsa explained.

Such has been his form that he’s been tipped as a possible target for former side, Chelsea.

Bamford joined Chelsea from Nottingham Forest in January 2012 but failed to kick a ball for the Blues. The 27-year-old spent time on loan with several clubs before finding a home at Middlesbrough.

That led to a bargain £7m switch to Elland Road in 2018 – and he’s not looked back since.

While a move to Chelsea looks unlikely, it’s not one that would be totally unexpected. His form in front of goal completely contrasts that of their big-money No 9, Timo Werner. The German has 10 goals in 39 appearances – and has just two goals in his last 27 appearances for the Blues, leading to the speculation.

However, Andros Townsend – speaking to Premier League Productions – doesn’t think Bamford would entertain any thoughts of a move away.

And even if Chelsea did come calling, Bamford knows he has a manager who trusts him in Bielsa.

Patrick Bamford admits to being left a little disappointed after failing to be called up to the latest England squad, but suggests he's focused on improving and earning his place in Gareth Southgate's plans.

“I don’t think he will want to go anywhere,” said Townsend. “He’s been around. He’s done the rounds. He has been everywhere. It’s not worked out on occasions.

“He has finally settled down. He has got a manager who appreciates his game and he is getting the best out of him.

“So, even if clubs come calling then I don’t think he will be fazed one bit.”

Bielsa hopes England chance still comes for Bamford

Despite missing out on a place in the England squad, Bielsa still hopes Gareth Southgate will still consider calling-up the Leeds star.

Bamford scored one and made another as Leeds made it seven away wins for the season with a 2-1 success at Fulham.

And while Bielsa does not believe his number nine was out to make a point, he is hopeful that he will be given a chance on the international stage.

“I don’t think he had that spirit,” he said in his post-match press conference. “He plays to be picked, but I don’t think he has the spirit of trying to prove someone wrong.

“The fact he was considered has a lot of value already. Perhaps in the time left he will get another opportunity.”
