Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny insists his side would all welcome the Paul Pogba transfer, having ridiculed claims the midfielder is past his best.
The 29-year-old star is a free agent this summer with his Manchester United exit now officially confirmed. The World Cup winner failed to consistently hit the heights at Old Trafford and walks away six years after a world-record £89.3m switch there from Juventus.
However, despite his inconsistencies, Pogba remains very much a man in demand. To that end, some of Europe’s top clubs remain on his trail, with Real Madrid, PSG and Juventus among those keen.
However, it is Juventus who have emerged from the shadows to lead the chase for their former star. The Bianconeri have an excellent record over the years of signing some of the game’s top free agents. And while doubts have been expressed over whether Pogba is now past his best, Szczesny is adamant his capture will be welcomed by all at the club.
“Yes, we’d welcome him back,” Szczesny said of the four-time Serie A title winner. “He did brilliantly in his previous time at Juventus so he would be a great addition to the squad. He is a player with good calibre and experience, and he has good memories from Turin.
“I’d be delighted to see that happen. He’s absolutely still a top player. Maybe over the last couple of years, the consistency of his game and the injuries didn’t help at United. But when he is fit, he is still one of the best in the world.”
Pogba will likely need to accept a huge wages cut to return to former club Juventus. Indeed, he will likely earn less than half of the estimated £290,000 a week salary he collected during his six seasons at Manchester United.
Paul Pogba transfer to spell end of Aaron Ramsey – report
His move, however, has been cleared with Juventus allowing Paulo Dybala to depart. The Argentine also departs as a free agent, with the forward dropping a big hint over a possible move to the Premier League.
The Paul Pogba transfer would likely mean the end of Aaron Ramsey’s time in Turin. He himself was a free-transfer signing from Arsenal in 2019. However, he has failed to live up to his billing in Italy. Indeed, he spent the last half of this season on loan at Rangers.
His spell, there, however, did not run to script either. Indeed, Ramsey was the player who missed the crucial penalty in the Europa League final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt after the match finished 1-1.
And while he seemingly has no future at Juventus, Szczesny insists it is not impossible he forms a new-look midfield partnership with Pogba.
Paul Pogba offered 3 year deal by Juventus
Paul Pogba will leave Manchester United this summer and has been offered a 3 year deal by Juventus but PSG still want him
“I’d take that — if they are both fit. It’s up to Aaron and the club what he does next. A fit Aaron Ramsey is a very good player,” he added via the Daily Mirror.
“That has been a big problem for him over the last few years. If he can get himself fit he’s a great addition to our team or any club in Europe. He’s a brilliant football player.”
Despite Szczesny’s kind words, it appears the Pogba transfer will only accelarate Ramsey’s departure from the Allianz Stadium.
The Wales midfielder has another year left on his deal. And at 31, Juventus would not stand in his way if a decent offer came their way for his services.
