Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has named Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as the club’s best player of the season so far, despite initially being skeptical about the midfielder.

Hojbjerg arrived at Tottenham from fellow Premier League side Southampton in the summer. He has instantly outlined himself as an indispensable player for Jose Mourinho.

The former Bayern Munich player has been ever-present in the first nine league games of the season, helping Tottenham to top spot. Hojbjerg has received praise not just for his own qualities, but also for bringing the best out in those around him.

Tottenham have a star-studded squad this season, that many think could compete for the title. The return of Gareth Bale has added fresh optimism in north London, while the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min remain in good form.

However, Robinson believes Hojbjerg has eclipsed them all this season after another impressive display in their win over Manchester City at the weekend.

Robinson told Football Insider: “I was underwhelmed by his signing but he has been the outstanding player of the season so far.

“He sits in front of the defence and pulls the strings without being overly flamboyant. He does not make you get off your seat but he works so hard and keeps those around him in check.”

Hojbjerg a ‘really astute signing’

The midfielder only cost Tottenham £15m, and although he does not provide much of a goal threat, his work in the defensive phase is proving crucial for his new club.

Robinson admits he was wrong to doubt the 25-year-old, who he says stands out for doing the simple things well.

The pundit added: “I think he has been a really, really astute signing. He just keeps things simple, rotates the play and breaks up play.

“He was the best player on Saturday and has been the best player all season.”
