Pep thanks Liverpool for pushing Man City to new level after title win

Pep Guardiola TEAMtalk

Pep Guardiola thanked Liverpool for pushing his Manchester City side to a new level after they retained their Premier League crown.

City retained the title and finally ended Liverpool’s magnificent challenge after surviving a scare to come from behind and outclass Brighton at the Amex.

Goals from Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan sealed a 4-1 win and meant City finished a point ahead of rivals Liverpool, who saw off Wolves on the final day, in what was a dramatic title race.

He told Sky Sports: “We have to say congratulations to Liverpool and thank you so much – they pushed us to increase our standards.

“It’s incredible, 98 points, to go back-to-back. We made the standard higher last season and Liverpool helped us – to win this title we had to win 14 in a row. We couldn’t lose one point.

“It’s the toughest title we have won in all my career, by far.

“We knew we had to win, simple as that. We didn’t think about Liverpool. We just think about our game.

“For me this is important, but more important is for my team-mates and I hope next year we can do the same.”
