Harry Kane TEAMtalk

Peter Crouch fears Harry Kane will be forced to leave Tottenham after admitting the club are ‘not matching his ambition’ with their current levels of transfer spending.

Spurs are not expected to make too many high profile signings this summer as they battle with the financial fall-out from the Covid-19 crisis. But former striker Crouch suggests that position could have an impact on Kane’s future at the club.

The England captain has suggested he will consider his future at Spurs if they fail to challenge for trophies and Crouch fears that decision is looming large.

“It’s a difficult situation for Harry Kane because, at the end of the day, the club does need to match his ambition, and it’s not doing that at the moment,” Crouch told Paddy Power.

“In an ideal situation, he’d stay there and fight for the Champions League, fight for league titles, but they’re just not on that level. So, yes, his head could be turned.

“I had to make lots of difficult decisions in my career – every time I moved club, it wasn’t because I particularly wanted to, but I had to. I would’ve liked to have been a one-club man.

“Even going from Southampton to Liverpool, which was an amazing move for me, I was happy and settled there. I was scoring goals, but we got relegated, and you don’t say no to Liverpool.

“Again, when I left Anfield, where do you go from there? I was so happy. I was flying, playing for England, and then Fernando Torres came in. It was one of those things where I had to move on – that’s the way it is in football.

“My advice to Harry would be: the grass isn’t always greener. You could go somewhere and win a trophy, but it’d mean a hell of a lot more to win a trophy with Tottenham than somewhere else.”

Last season a disappointment for Tottenham

Crouch believes Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is under pressure to deliver silverware to Tottenham in the upcoming season, with failure to qualify for this season’s Champions League evidence of a slide in fortunes at the club.

“Last season was disappointing for Tottenham,” he added. “The players look like a shadow of their former selves. I look at Dele Alli, or Tanguy Ndombele, there’s a player in there somewhere. There’s a few that need replacing.

“This summer is a big opportunity for Tottenham to strengthen and to get it right this time – because, next season, it won’t be tolerated.

“You need to keep things fresh. Whenever I watch them play, they just don’t look like the Tottenham of old, when they were exciting.

“There was one stage when they were close to winning the league – when Leicester did – but they’ve fallen well short of that in recent years.

“Reaching the Champions League final was amazing for the club and, at the start of last season, you expected Tottenham to kick on. But they haven’t at all, and you have to say last season was a real disappointment.”
