Lifeline for Man Utd outcast as Newcastle lead two Prem rivals in hunt

Steve Bruce has made contact with Manchester United coach Michael Carrick to discuss a possible move for Phil Jones, according to reports.

Jones is nearing the end of his long stay at Old Trafford. The 28-year-old has been with United since 2011, but has fallen down the pecking order in recent years.

After making just two Premier League appearances last season, Jones was left out of the Red Devils’ squad for the season. Even though he still has a contract until 2023, it seems likely he will leave the club in 2021.

Jones could even seek a move in January as he looks to reignite his career. There have been concerns, though, that there would not be any suitors for him that would be able to afford his wages.

Hence, it led to speculation that he might have to drop down to the Championship and take a paycut.

However, Jones now has some options in the Premier League. According to Eurosport, Newcastle are interested in signing him in January.

Manager Bruce has a good relationship with Man Utd first team coach Carrick. Therefore, the report claims he has been in touch with the former England midfielder to see how Jones is doing physically.

Given that he has not played competitively since January, any buying club will need to ensure their new signing will be able to get up to speed quickly.

Should Carrick have reported back to Bruce positively, Newcastle will weigh up their options. Man Utd will not stand in Jones’ way if a suitable offer comes in.

Likewise, Jones appears to understand he may have to lower his wage demands to find a new club. That may give Newcastle hope of putting together a convincing package for him.

Leicester, West Ham want Jones

However, Newcastle are not the only suitor for the former England international. The report adds that two other Premier League sides are in the hunt for him.

Leicester and West Ham are said to be considering their own moves for Jones. Both clubs were keen to strengthen their defence over the summer, and while Leicester won the race for Wesley Fofana, they could go head-to-head again.

West Ham managed to sign Craig Dawson on loan as a short-term solution instead of Fofana. However, he is yet to feature for his new club, so David Moyes may want a more permanent option such as Jones.
