Juventus boss Andrea Pirlo has suggested his side could be ready to make a bid to sign Olivier Giroud in January after confirming his interest in the Chelsea striker.
The 34-year-old Frenchman has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent months. He has stepped in from the shadows to score nine times in 15 appearances and become Chelsea’s first-choice striker.
However, with his current contract due to expire in six months, he is still being linked with a Stamford Bridge exit.
Indeed, Giroud has been tipped to sign for Inter Milan, who want back-up to prolific frontman Romelu Lukaku. Atletico Madrid have also been mentioned as suitors as they look to replace the departing Diego Costa.
However, it is Juventus who are now emerging as frontrunners.
Speaking briefly about the transfer talk, Pirlo seemed to confirm Juve’s pursuit of Giroud. He said: “He’d be handy!
“We already discussed with the club what we want to do and if there are any opportunities. We hope to do something over the next few days.”
Juve were first linked with Giroud back in September. It was reported at the time that Giroud had signed a provisional contract agreement with officials in Turin.
The move never came to fruition and the striker has gone on to score nine goals for Chelsea this campaign.
His best performance came in the 4-0 beating of Spanish side Sevilla in the Champions League group stage.
Giroud scored all four goals to ensure Frank Lampard’s men won Group E of the competition.
He’s since scored Premier League goals against the likes of Wolves and Aston Villa. However, he was an unused substitute in Sunday’s poor defeat to Man City that has left Lampard on the brink of the sack.
For Chelsea’s hierarchy, however, making a decision on Giroud’s future may need to come first.
With the striker eligible to leave for free in the summer, they must decide whether to cash in now or reward him with a new deal.
Arsenal tipped to re-sign Giroud
Louis Saha, meanwhile, has told Genting Bet, as cited by Metro that Arsenal would be wise to re-sign the veteran striker.
“Olivier Giroud could be a good option for Arsenal if they were to re-sign him.
“He is a top striker. He might not always give you the style that you want. But he is always questioned and stands up to answer them.
“Any side in England would love to have a Giroud on top form in their team.”
