Pochettino gives honest assessment after embarrassing cup exit

Mauricio Pochettino was brutally honest about Tottenham’s shock EFL Cup 3rd-round exit at the hands of Colchester on Tuesday night.

The visitors crashed out 4-3 on penalties to the League Two side at the JobServe Community Stadium after a goalless draw, in what another hugely disappointing display from a much-changed Spurs team.

Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura were the guilty men from the spot as Colchester, who beat Crystal Palace on penalties in the previous round, celebrated a memorable night.

After the match Pochettino said: “Colchester made a fantastic game, it was difficult. We are so disappointed we could not score in 90 minutes.

“They beat Palace on penalties too, that can happen. That’s the beauty of the competition, always something can happen.

“We wanted to go further but we are out.

“They defended well but the difference in the level is there and we should have more aggressive in the final third.

“We feel disappointed. We had plenty of quality on the pitch but we didn’t find a way through to score.”
