Jean-Philippe Mateta Mainz

Leeds United are keen on a January deal for a Mainz striker, who has caught the eye this season with his impressive record in front of goal.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have adapted well upon their return to the Premier League. Despite a 3-0 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday, Leeds have caught the eye and currently sit 12th.

They have also netted 30 goals already – with forward Patrick Bamford netting 10 of those. Such has been Bamford’s form, that it comes as no surprise to see Leeds looking to tie their No 9 down to a new deal.

But they do lack depth to their squad and would suffer were Bamford forced to sit out the action.

They do have Spain striker Rodrigo Moreno as an option – but he has impressed in a deeper No 10 role for Bielsa.

As such, it’s no surprise to see Leeds looking to add more striker options to their pool.

And, according to Football Insider, Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is top of their wanted list.

As per the report, Victor Orta and his scouts have been impressed by Mateta’s form and are considering a January approach.

Leeds United are keen on a January deal for a Mainz striker, who has caught the eye this season with his impressive record in front of goal.

Mateta has 10 goals in 16 appearances this season, including seven in 12 Bundesliga games. His form is already said to have alerted Tottenham to his potential.

Having signed for £7m from Lyon in 2018, Mainz are now said to value the striker at around the £30m mark.

Mateta also came under Crystal Palace’s radar in the summer.

And while the striker stayed, Mainz could be open to his sale were a tempting bid be made.

Mainz open to sale

Mainz may have no choice but to cash in on the striker, who represented France at under-19 and under-21 level.

Sporting director Rouven Schroder has admitted that there are plenty of options for Mateta. He’s also stated they have already rejected offers for the striker in previous transfer windows. Now, they may be ready to let go of their number nine if the right offer arrives.

“A forward who is fit again and has the perfect age is in demand despite the virus,” Schroder told BILD.

“[If an outrageous offer comes in] we would then need to sit down and discuss it. We rejected something last winter and in summer, too.”

However, Schroder did warn that Mateta’s focus is fully with Mainz at present.

“Him declaring that his goal is to score more goals than his first year implies he doesn’t want to leave.”

Mateta remains under contract at Mainz until 2023, after signing a new contract there last year.
