Paris Saint-Germain have opened talks in an effort to beat three Premier League clubs to Dayot Upamecano, claim reports in France.
Upamecano is likely to be one of the most sought after players in the upcoming transfer window. The promising defender is out of contract at RB Leipzig in 2021, so they may cash in on him before that deal expires – despite their claims to the contrary.
Recent reports have linked the France Under-21 international with a move to Arsenal. Mikel Arteta may be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements, despite David Luiz extending his stay.
The Arsenal boss has reportedly outlined Upamecano as one of his ‘dream’ signings. In fact, they could make a double raid on Red Bull, as Arteta also wants Dominik Szoboszlai from Leipzig’s sister club Salzburg.
However, Chelsea have also entered the race for Upamecano, who started 27 Bundesliga games this season. The Blues have already heavily invested in their attack with deals for Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, but may need to strengthen at the back to challenge for the title.
Upamecano may be an ideal reinforcement if he follows Werner from Leipzig to Stamford Bridge. But according to Le10 Sport, the centre-back may not end up in the Premier League after all.
The French source claims that PSG are in touch with Upamecano’s agents to try and convince him to return to his home country, where he has never played at senior club level.
Upamecano is one of two young French defenders PSG have outlined as potential targets. The other is Barcelona’s Jean-Clair Todibo, but they prefer Upamecano.
Le10 Sport claim that PSG are ready to enter the race for Upamecano. Their tactic will be to convince the player first, before launching their offer to Leipzig.
Given that Upamecano has a €60m buyout clause, persuading him could be crucial. Should any club meet that value, Leipzig will be forced to let him leave if he wants to.
MAN CITY ALSO JOIN RACE FOR UPAMECANO
However, the report warns that PSG will have to play catch up with three Premier League sides. Manchester City have reportedly joined Arsenal and Chelsea in battling for the 21-year-old.
City did not sign a replacement for Vincent Kompany last summer, and their defensive record has subsequently worsened.
Whether they will be able to win the race for Upamecano remains to be seen, with the four-way battle set to intensify in the coming months.
It could complicate further if AC Milan step up their own interest. However, Le10 Sport‘s report makes no reference to the Italian club.
