The Premier League club have been granted permission by the Eredivisie champions to discuss terms with Wijnaldum, who will also undergo a medical at St James’ Park.

Everton were thought to be providing competition for the Dutch international’s signature, but with Newcastle entering advanced talks, it appears as though Steve McClaren may seal his first signing as manager.

PSV’s technical manager Marcel Brands told the club’s official website: “Georginio Wijnaldum has left the players’ hotel in Evian-les-Bains. The 24-year-old captain is on his way to England to reach a personal agreement there with Newcastle United.

“PSV and Newcastle are approaching an agreement on the terms of a transfer and the club has decided to give Wijnaldum permission to travel to England.”

The 24-year-old Wijnaldum captained the PSV team which won the Dutch title last season and has been a long-term Newcastle target.

The former Feyenoord man has been capped 19 times by the Netherlands and was on target in their 3-0 defeat of Brazil in the third place play-off at the World Cup last summer.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren knows Wijnaldum well from his two stints in charge of Dutch side FC Twente.
