Pundit would not be surprised to see Liverpool theory come true in January

One pundit believes Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum could already have agreed a deal with another club.

Wijnaldum is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, where he has been since 2016. In that time, he has picked up medals in the Premier League and Champions League.

He remains a key player for Jurgen Klopp, but his coach may soon have to find a way to work without him. Wijnaldum will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January.

Indeed, going abroad is the most likely option for the midfielder. Barcelona were heavily linked with him over the summer and still retain an interest.

Wijnaldum played under Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman for the Netherlands, and his old coach would now like to have him at club level. However, two obstacles prevented a deal going through in the summer.

2021 could be the year for Koeman to get his man, although Barcelona are not alone in their interest. For example, Inter Milan have joined the race for his signature.

Whoever gets their hands on Wijnaldum may already have found an agreement with him, according to former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips.

He told Football Insider: “It would not surprise me if something has already been agreed.

“Legally it cannot be made public but it would not surprise me if something has been done in the background.

“I am reading that he has turned down a lucrative new deal so there must be something in the pipeline.”

Wijnaldum could leave in January

If Wijnaldum is to leave Liverpool, there is a strong chance that they could lose him for nothing, unless they sell him in January.

Alternatively, the 30-year-old could sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club when the winter window opens that would allow him to move for free in the summer.

Phillips thinks January could be a crucial month for finding out Wijnaldum’s plans.

The pundit added: “It would not surprise me if he signs a pre-contract in January or if he leaves in January.

“It is a shame for Jurgen Klopp because Wijnaldum has been a top player for Liverpool. It is another issue that Klopp needs to deal with come the new year.”
