Pundit rips into Chelsea stars for making Tuchel job look like masterstroke

Pundit Glen Johnson believes that Chelsea’s form since Thomas Tuchel arrived is nothing which his predecessor Frank Lampard could not achieve.

Tuchel replaced Lampard in January after a run of only four wins in 10 games in all competitions.

However, eight of those matches came in the Premier League, resulting in only two wins and five defeats.

Since Tuchel’s appointment, though, the Blues have gone 11 games unbeaten. What’s more, they now sit fourth in the top flight and have put themselves in a strong position to retain their place.

Nevertheless, Johnson insists that Chelsea’s stars could have produced similar results if they had committed more to Lampard.

“When Tuchel first came in, Chelsea were beating teams that they should have been beating, but now they’ve shown they can beat Tottenham, Everton and got a good result against Manchester United,” Johnson said.

“I think that Lampard could have done a similar job, it’s just a shame and a problem for the players.

“How can they perform like this for the new manager but they couldn’t for Lampard?”

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel says special moments have helped build a strong bond between his players.

Johnson, speaking to CheltenhamGuides.com, added: “So the players have to look at themselves. But that said, right now the appointment looks good because they’re absolutely flying.”

Earning clean sheets has proved one of Tuchel’s most noticeable impacts since his arrival; Chelsea have kept nine of 11 opponents out since the German took charge.

Their next task sees them face Leeds in the Premier League on Saturday. Ironically, Chelsea beat Leeds 3-1 at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season to move top, in the game before the Blues’ downturn.

Report claims Chelsea man could quit

Meanwhile, a report claims that Chelsea striker Timo Werner could quit this summer.

The 25-year-old arrived last June and has struggled to recreate the explosive form he showed for RB Leipzig.

As such, Chelsea figures supposedly do not expect the forward to see out his contract.
