Pundit savages Tottenham star for lame displays that have let Mourinho down

Carlos Vinicius let Jose Mourinho down with a limp display in Sunday’s draw at Newcastle amid doubts surrounding his long-term future at Tottenham.

Spurs brought Brazilian striker Vinicius in on loan in October as support to star man Harry Kane. As the Daily Mail reports, the contract contains an option for Tottenham to make the deal permanent for £36million. However, it’s reported chairman Daniel Levy will offer only £17million for now, less than half of the asking price.

He has had few opportunity to shine in the Premier League, but did get a rare start on Sunday in the 2-2 draw at Newcastle. However, the on-loan Benfica man was hooked at half-time after struggling to make an impact.

Now pundit Paul Robinson has questioned the Brazilian’s abilities and has suggested he let Mourinho down at St James’ Park.

“I didn’t think Son would be fit enough to start, so I expected Vinicius to play,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“He was very impressive last month, he did very well against Aston Villa. But let’s be honest he went missing against Newcastle.

“It was no surprise to see him get brought off. He didn’t really get into the game at all.

“He was ineffective against Newcastle and Kane was the only one that carried a real threat going forward early on, it was disappointing.”

Vinicius agent set for more talks

It all means that Vinicius faces a battle to secure a long-term future for himself at Tottenham. Given Levy is looking for a reduction in his cost, it would suggest a return to Benfica looks more likely.

His agent Flavio Ribeiro has already held talks with Benfica director Rui Costa to discuss Vinicius’ future.

But the agent has scheduled a new meeting for later this month, in which Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieria will be in attendance.
