Pundit in big Timo Werner claim as Liverpool target’s choice is stated

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Timo Werner this summer have been handed another lift after a European football expert offered the inside track on the RB Leipzig star’s thinking.

Werner has been in outstanding form RB Leipzig this term, having scored 20 goals and six assists while appearing in every league game this season.

Such form has helped his side to mount a charge for the Bundesliga title, while Werner’s tally for the season stands at 25 goals in 30 appearances.

The striker, 23, has been on Liverpool’s radar for the last three seasons and with a €60m exit clause due to kick-in at the end of the season, he very much remains a player of interest for Klopp.

Rumours about Werner moving to Anfield at the end of the season have intensified in recent weeks with the player dropping a significant hint just last month that he foresees a future for himself in the Premier League.

“The Premier League is certainly the most interesting league, you have to say,” he told Bild. “There is a certain flair to watching the English league and playing there.”

And to further substantiate those rumours, European football expert Kevin Hatchard claims Werner wants to join the Reds ahead of a move to Bayern Munich, who are also ready to make a summer move for his services.

“They’re talking about the top end of €60million,” Hatchard said on TalkSport.

“So, for me, for a player of his quality and experience, bearing in mind this is a guy who is in his early to mid-20s and he has played over 200 games in the Bundesliga.

“So vastly experienced already, improving all the time, I think he has really benefited from playing under [RB Leipzig boss] Julien Nagelsmann because he played as an out-and-out striker for pretty much his whole career.

“Nagelsmann has said to him, ‘Look I think you can be much more dangerous playing from a deeper role’.

“So he has almost been playing as an attacking midfielder at times – kind of driving past defences with his pace.

“So he is improving and I think he would do very well in the Premier League.

“He has said on numerous occasions he thinks the Premier League is an exciting prospect and some pretty reliable German media sources are saying that Liverpool are very much one of the clubs who want to sign him and he is keen.”

Hatchard added: “Now he was very strongly linked with Bayern for a long time, that seems to have gone away.

“He didn’t push for a move to Bayern and Bayern seemed to have lost interest.

“So I think Liverpool certainly would be very, very prominent in that race to sign him.”

A shock exit for incumbent centre-forward Roberto Firmino has hit the headlines, with the 23-year-old Werner seemingly the perfect replacement.

All this has been taken with a pinch of salt if RB Leipzig’s official twitter account is anything to go by, however, with their latest post poking fun at the Liverpool links.

Replying to a tweet commenting on the Reds’ interest in their star man, the club’s twitter account cheekily replied ‘We heared. [sic] he is headed towards #Tottenham though …’

Meanwhile, Liverpool could be set to be without talismanic forward Mohammes Salah for two separate stints next season after the Egyptian under-23 coach dropped a bombshell regarding the 2020 Olympics.

Football in the Olympics is classified as an under 23 competition, but the regulations allow for three players over the age limit to participate as well.

Egypt booked their place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics football event after reaching the final stages of the 2019 U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Shawky Gharib – Egypt’s U23 boss recently said: “Out of the three senior players we’ll call-up, Salah is the only one we’re settled on so far because he’s simply one of the top three players in the world,”
