Pundit sides with Mourinho over Tottenham need for player with ‘tricks’

Jose Mourinho, Harry Kane Tottenham TEAMtalk

Former Arsenal star Kevin Campbell agrees with Jose Mourinho that Tottenham should move mountains to sign Juventus forward Paulo Dybala.

Mourinho has been in charge of the north Londoners since November 2019. It has taken some time but he has now converted them into a counter-attacking side.

It is not the usual ‘Spurs way’ but was mighty effective at the start of the campaign. Seven wins and four draws from their first 12 games saw them sit at the top of the table.

However, back-to-back losses – against Liverpool and Leicester – have slowed their progress this term. They are currently sixth in the top-flight standings, six points adrift of the table-topping Reds.

There is no question that opposition teams will get wise to the tactics. And it is for that reason that Campbell believes the Portuguese tactician needs to sign Dybala.

“Dybala is a superb player. He is someone with tricks and he is someone who can unlock the door,” he told Football Insider.

“Mourinho is building from the back. He has sorted the defence and the base of his midfield while the partnership of Son and Kane is thriving.

“But I think he knows there will be times where teams will sit in and ask Spurs to break them down.”

Dybala the right fit

Spurs have been linked with Dybala in the past and Mourinho is said to be keen on taking him to Tottenham.

The Harry KaneSon Heung-min partnership continues to flourish and is as good as most around. But Dybala offers something different, with pace to burn plus the ability to bring others into the game.

Capped 29 times by Argentina, the former Palermo man has excellent positional sense and can go past defenders with ease. He could be the answer to when teams sit back and try to invite Spurs onto them.

With 97 goals from 241 appearances in all competitions for Juve, he is a threat in the final third. And Campbell feels the Tottenham boss should bolster his attacking options by signing the South American.

“Mourinho will need a different option, an alternative to be able to unlock the door and Dybala could be that,” he added. “He has not messed around with his transfer so far. He is going for key players in key positions.”

Spurs face Stoke City in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday and play Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday.
