Ralf Rangnick predicts Werner to flourish under Klopp if Liverpool swoop

Former RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick has declared that Timo Werner’s “powerful” finishing ability is among the traits that would see him fit in at Liverpool.

Werner is one of Europe’s most prolific strikers this season having scored 27 goals in 36 games and he has become one of the continent’s most sought-after forwards.

The 24-year-old has been linked with an extended stay in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich as well as a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool most heavily linked ahead of Chelsea.

Indeed, Werner has praised his fellow German Jurgen Klopp for his style of play and revealed that he believed he would work well with his compatriot at Anfield.

Speaking to Bild (via Goal), Rangnick – now a senior figure at Red Bull – echoed the same sentiment but insisted that he would prefer Werner to stay at Leipzig.

“The league is less important, but the club, from a purely hypothetical point of view, I would better see him in good hands with a club that is not necessarily defined by ball possession football,” the former coach said.

“Since Timo has made progress under [Leipzig manager] Julian Nagelsmann, his most important weapons, however, are the quick switching movement and his powerful finish.

“Therefore, he would rather fit a club like Liverpool, which is similar to our style of play, but I would prefer him to stay here.”

Werner has a £52million release clause in his contract – which expires at the end of June – but a report has stated that that fee will drop if Leipzig fail to win the Bundesliga this season.

Nagelsmann’s team sit third in the German top flight, five points behind leaders Bayern, with the action set to resume on Saturday after its postponement throughout March and April.

Leipzig’s first game back sees them travel to Freiburg.

In other news, Atletico Madrid have reportedly proposed a swap deal involving Thomas Partey and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
