Claudio Ranieri: Another feather in his cap

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri says his team have a “great opportunity” after beating Watford 1-0 to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Riyad Mahrez scored a stunning goal in the second half to claim the win for the Foxes, and after Spurs and Arsenal drew in the north-London derby earlier today, Ranieri’s side now go five points clear with only nine games remaining.

Manager Ranieri admitted the game against Watford was a “tough match”, but hailed his side after claiming a vital win.

Speaking after the match, Ranieri said: “An important win, a big battle. Now there will be only battles for everybody not just for us. A tough match. We created four or five chances, they created two or three.

“We are so happy now. We wanted to show what we have inside. The desire is so high and we have a great opportunity. We know the way is very long and very tough.”

Mahrez left Leicester fans fearing the worst having appeared to pull up in the second half, but Ranieri insists the match-winner didn’t pick up an injury.

“No injury,” said Ranieri. “He was tired and had a little cramp so I changed him in the late minutes. His goal was so important.”

When asked about the Premier League title race, the Italian manager remained calm and insisted that despite their five point lead at the top of the table, he is not getting carried away.

“The title is not ours,” said Ranieri. “We have to fight a lot, step by step and keep our feet on the ground. At the end we can see what happens. I’m sorry, we know every team can win or lose so it has to be slowly slowly.”
