Readers think Man United should make last-minute move for Mahrez

Joe Williams

A Manchester United fan wants the club to make a late move for Riyad Mahrez, while there’s some stick for Arsene Wenger and Jordan Henderson, all in Your Says of the Day.

The Wenger circus just keeps rolling on

2 games into a season and already its hard not to be frustrated by this club.

How is it that we start another PL season with a team and specifically a defence, not ready to compete? How dare Arsene Wenger say after the game that he was not convinced by the central defence?! What other supposed top team, would start the season with 2 left backs playing at CB and a right wing back playing on the left? Then, he moved our actual, apparent first choice right sides defender onto the left in order to accommodate a player who won’t sign a new deal at the club! The Wenger circus just keeps rolling on.

He knew Mustafi would be late back in then summer and he also knew Koscielny was not available. He has since sold one of our defenders and appears to be uninterested in buying a replacement. Anyone who watched the community shield and the game against Leicester knows that Kolasinac is one of the best attacking threats in the team. So why not play him in that position? It’s as if Wenger constantly feels the need to go against the grain in order to try and be different and prove his way works best. As we saw again, it doesn’t.

I would argue that the goal we conceded highlights perfectly, why we need another CM this window. Sloppy again from Xhaka, to concede possession. Stoke still travelled half of the field unchallenged but he should have done better with the pass. However, if you watch the goal again, take note of where his midfield partner is. Ramsey was practically beyond the last Stoke defender in a position you would expect to see a CF. Consequently, Stoke were given the freedom of the pitch to surge forward because neither of our CM pairing where in a position where they could do anything. If we carry on playing like this, some teams in this league will absolutely rip us to bits.

Yet again, we find ourselves 2 weeks away from the window closing and we still need a CB and a CM AT LEAST! Just how many summers have we been saying that now?

Losing patience with ‘incompetent’ Wenger

Wenger signed these players, he overpaid them, played them out of position or didn’t play them at all used them as an excuse not to buy real players. And now he tells us the squad is too big and he needs to sell them only he can’t. Whilst all of this is going on he has players we need in the last year of their contracts. Its incompetence, nothing else, can’t get rid of players we don’t want, can’t keep players we do want. Absolute madness.

Ozil has been a disastrous signing for Arsenal

Muffler_1 is 100% right, no one actually wants Ozil. His agent has been touting him around Europe since January and no one is interested. We can’t sell him so we will have to write the £42million we paid for him off. To be honest he doesn’t even warrant a place in the side and should be dropped. All in all he has been a disastrous signing. As for Sanchez people seem to be forgetting that he can sign a pre-contract agreement on Jan 1st, he could then play like a drain until the end of the season. Wenger has invited bids with his stupid comments, I still think he will leave in this window, if he stays I doubt we will see much of him in the side as he will be ill and unfit until Dec 31st.

Bakayoko reminds me of Pogba

I said in a couple of posts last week that the decision as to who partners Kante was crucial if we were to get anything from the game. Great selection by Conte and a great victory. We certainly did not look like a team ready to fall apart and capitulate as many of the press and pundits suggested

Really impressed with an unfit Bakayoko who resembles Pogba to me in the way he drives forward. Cannot wait to see him fully fit…!!. Like many others, felt that Christensen had another good, calm solid game and you can understand why we chose to keep him and I echo someone else’s thoughts about Cahill potentially struggling to get back into the team…?

Felt Morata did well enough and worked his socks off. Obviously should have scored but I can see that he will come good and get goals this season.

I am not the biggest fan of Moses but credit where it is due. He played really well especially covering back

Glad to get the season up and running and when Hazard returns then we will be a team to cause anyone problems. We simply need to get at least another couple of players in to bolster the squad. KTBFFH

The media are laughing at Conte

Sorry 999,I’d take press talk with a pinch of salt mate!.A couple days from now this ‘Punch and Judy Show’ will be doing the rounds again,Conte and Costa will be quizzed again by the media what’s the latest state of affairs and those very same media will be turning the whole saga into a laughing matter for their own ends.Trust me,the media is not laughing with Conte, they’re laughing at him and Chelsea!.Let’s be honest here,if the club had a pre-agreement with Atletico and the money already in the bank or the cash of the above amounts is held abeyance until Athletico’s transfer embargo is lifted would you see Conte’s face in front of the cameras trying to laugh off or pouring scorn on any alleged comments Costa’s been making to the media?…of course not!,Conte’s got biggrr fish to fry, this nonsense he can do without,Costa would be officially out of Conte’s hair or the club telling Conte all questions and answers re Costa is off limits, subject closed!.This thing has got to soap opera proportions, fuelled by the media no doubt…should be interesting what the next installment is!

So much for Total Football, this smells like the Pardew era

It certainly does !! As does putting Dann upfront. Shows how limited our options are. Do we have no other options… that is pretty desperate stuff.. smells of the Pardew era, just before he went. So much for total football. Benteke is lazy, and as I said at the time a total waste of 30 million pounds. We have no-one who can put the ball in the net. We have heard nothing about Wickham which is not good news. I would have thought and hoped he would be about ready about now, if all had gone to plan.Lets hope he is back soon as he was always a far more committed player than Benteke. Desperate times again, we seem to lurch from one crisis to another. We need some firepower for sure and if no-one comes in in the next 10 days i really do think that we are doomed this season ala Sunderland. There is only so many times you can escape by the skin of your teeth !! Lets face it the only three reasons why we stayed up last season were Zaha ( now injured) , Allardyce ( now left) and Sakho ( not prepare to get him back it seems)

We can’t go into next summer needing to replace Coutinho

Having a player of Coutinho’s stature in the game doesn’t hurt when you’re trying to tempt other top players to the club. Now, he’s going nowhere this summer but he’s surely going to be gone next time.

There is a problem here and that goes back to our discussions about how you can’t fix a whole team at once. The window is not far from closing and we haven’t addressed key areas this summer, we can;t go into next summer needing to replace Coutinho , get a top CB, a top CM/DM type player and who knows what other issues we may have. It’s too much, especially when we’ll be approaching the time where the fans and maybe even the owners will be expecting better results from Klopps project than maybe getting top 4.

So, you see, it could not be more critical that we get top quality in before this window shuts.

Lack of alternatives to Keita and Van Dijk could hurt Liverpool

TBH, we bloody well better. It is extremely quiet though. The media will almost always pick up on genuine interest and inquiries somehow. Whether it be that a player is scouted or an agent is contacted but it’s just TOTALLY quiet.

I guess that means that we’re either not looking to sign anyone or we’re going to make a late play to sign players who are already well-known targets. I’m hoping for late captures of both Van Dijk and Keita. RB will have had time to fully realise that Keita is leaving for £45m (or whatever it is) next season, he won’t sign a new deal. Southampton doesn’t appear to be making headway in settling Van Dijk down again.

Our distinct lack of alternative targets could be the biggest mistake the clubs made in recent transfer history, after the Andy Carroll panic buy perhaps.

Bob, I for one will absolutely be turning up the volume if that window closes and we don’t do some serious strengthening. Until then we have to sit here and try not to let it get to us any more than it already has.

Mahrez would be a game-changer for Man United

I think if we are to make any last minute signings in the window it should Mahrez.

We don’t need Perisic as we have Rashford and Martial who can play left.

What we need is someone with the same pace and trickery on the right and Mahrez with his premiership experience fits the bill for me.

He has also shown a great attitude compared to the likes of cautinho.

Ibrahimovic will give United another option

He hit 28 goals last season and scored goals that other people can only dream of scoring (including Lukaku) – he will bring something different to our attack which is always an asset – when we pinned teams down and couldn’t find a goal at Old Trafford last season we needed a different weapon in our arsenal to shake things up and we didn’t have that – it was Ibrahimovic or nothing. Now, with Lukaku up front, we need that second option where someone can find a goal from nothing and Ibrahimovic can definitely be that man.

As long as he knows he isn’t first choice it will be fine; the squad seem to adore him both as a player and as a person which can only further improve the apparently excellent atmosphere around the club at the moment.

Jones can be an asset if he remains injury-free

I’ve always rated Phil Jones and the moment that he gets so much stick for but I’ve always considered brilliant defending was when he was sprawled out on the pitch and he tried to use his head to get the ball away despite the incoming swinging foot. To me, it was a ridiculous moment that showed character. It might not be graceful, and more stupid than brave, but he was still putting his head where other defenders wouldn’t want to put their foot.

He’s never going to be a Rio Ferdinand or a Maldini, he’s more of a John Terry type defender where he’ll put his body on the line for the cause. However, either Terry seems to be made of stronger stuff or else he knows how to tackle without hurting himself, which is probably an art in itself. If he can remain injury free, then he should grow to be and always be a good player to have in the ranks under Mourinho.

United’s attack is looking better than last season

Yes Rashford needs to improve his finishing in order to be world class but remember he’s only 19. Where was Lukaku at 19? And look at him now. I thought Rashford was great against West Ham and still played well against Swansea. He brings a lot of value to the team with his pace and directness, keeping the opposition defenders on their backheels and stretches the opposing team. We’ve missed someone like that for a long time. Also, he has really good movement all around. What’s happened with his finishing is that he missed a few chances last season and that messed with his head. So now every time he gets a chance he thinks too much. He should just shoot instinctively and don’t worry about scoring or not.

Martial should start as the left forward, Rashford should play striker or as a right forward who is more central than usual (since we have Valencia providing width on the right anyway).

Martial Lukaku Rashford

Martial Lukaku

Lukaku Rashford

Martial Rashford

It’s great that we have three strikers/forwards actually. There will be enough games for everyone, the cups haven’t even started yet. The attack is looking so much better than last season. Way better chemistry, energy, urgency, fluidity and interchanging.
