Reading boss Jaap Stam launches angry attack on Leeds fans

Jaap Stam: Side taken to the cleaners

Jaap Stam has torn into Leeds United fans after they labelled his Reading side ‘boring’ following their 2-0 defeat to the Whites at Elland Road on Tuesday night.

The Royals suffered a defeat at their play-off rivals despite enjoying 77% possession, with many of the home fans  giving it the ‘Ole’ as Stam’s side opted to knock the ball back and forth across their midfield and defence.

The win saw Leeds close the gap on Reading to just two points, but an unmoved Stam – who of course played for Leeds’ arch rivals Manchester United for many years – was quick to hit out at Whites fans, urging them to ‘look at the way their own side plays’.

“You can tell something about how they are as human beings to be fair,” he said.

“It’s a way of thinking.

“Because if you think that this is boring I think they need to have a look at their own team and how they play.”

Despite seeing far less of the ball during the contest, Leeds had four shots on target to Reading’s two.

The hosts were happy to let the visitors keep possession at the back – but then looked to break quickly on the occasions they did turn it over.

It was a game plan which worked – but Stam was scathing in how the hosts went about getting the three points.

He said: “They can say ‘we won’ and of course at the end it’s about the result – but if you need to play like that then I don’t want to be a manager.

“Because I don’t want to play and just wait and wait and wait. That’s not my type of playing, my type of tactics.

“You can say congratulations to Garry Monk, he got the result and everyone wants results.

“But in terms of way of playing, it’s not my cup of tea.”
