Real Madrid have prioritised the signing of Real Betis star Junior Firpo to replace a veteran defender, according to a report.

Spanish outlet AS recently claimed that a number of clubs are interested in Firpo, with the full-back having impressed greatly so far this season with Betis.

He got on the scoresheet at the Nou Camp earlier in the season, helping inflict Barcelona’s first home loss in two years as the Seville-based club prevailed 4-3 in a thriller.

Firpo is also reportedly attracting interest from Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester City, while a report from Italian outlet TMW linked Liverpool and Spurs with the 22-year-old.

The player is understood to have a release clause of £43.5million (€50m) after penning a new deal last summer.

Now, a fresh report from Don Balon states that Real Madrid want Firpo to replace Marcelo, who looks increasingly likely to move to Juventus in the summer.

For now there is some distance between the clubs on a figure, with Real asking for €40m and Juve only willing to pay €25m.

Los Blancos may also have an edge if they are willing to offer Theo Hernandez or even Dani Ceballos as counterparts in the deal, two players who are not being used regularly at the moment.
