Former Real Madrid player and manager Jorge Valdano has warned Martin Odegaard that his move to Arsenal could be a mistake as he criticised the Norwegian’s mentality.
Odegaard is about to complete a loan move to Arsenal from Real Madrid after struggling for gametime in the Spanish capital.
The La Liga giants have shown faith in Odegaard from an early age having signed him as a teenager. But they have not been giving him the opportunities he would have expected at senior level.
The 22-year-old has only started three games in La Liga this season. Hence, he has not been able to continue the progress he was making last season on loan with Real Sociedad.
With that in mind, Odegaard is now ready for another loan spell away from the Bernabeu. This time, he will be heading to the Premier League.
Arsenal could confirm the signing of the Norway international until the end of the season on Tuesday. The move has raised some questions in Madrid, with the midfielder’s mentality coming in for criticism from Valdano.
“The quality that Odegaard possesses is necessary for this Real Madrid team,” Valdano said.
“I don’t think that Odegaard has played badly. Perhaps he was a bit conservative when it came to him, maybe he lacked some more daring actions, but he also lacked patience to continue at Real Madrid.
“In the end he competes with two stars like Modric and Kroos.”
Odegaard taking a risk
Valdano suggested that a player capable of Real Madrid’s standards would not back down from the task of proving themselves at the Bernabeu.
“I am more concerned about his mentality,” he added.
“It is not worthy of a Real Madrid player to leave your place, not have that patience. It’s not just any player ahead of him.
“I am surprised that he would leave the club and leave his spot open for others.”
