Real Madrid have entered the race to sign Man Utd target Dayot Upamecano in 2021, according to reports in France.
Upamecano disappointed a range of suitors this summer by signing a new contract at RB Leipzig. However, the German club know they will not be able to keep him forever.
In fact, their manager Julian Nagelsmann admitted this week that he is unsure if Upamecano will still be at the club in the 2021-22 season.
Nagelsmann said on Wednesday: “He will be here for the season. I’m sure about that. As for the future, I’m not sure as he is very talented.
“Lots of clubs will want to buy – next season it could be real that he leaves the club. But this season he will stay.”
Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in a future deal for Upamecano. They are looking for a long-term partner for Harry Maguire at centre-back – and three reasons recently emerged why Upamecano had become their top target.
However, United will face intense competition for the 21-year-old. According to Le10Sport, Paris Saint-Germain are heavily interested in taking the player back to his native France.
In fact, they even made contact with his entourage over the summer – with the defender open to the move. They will have to wait until next year to make an offer, though.
That’s because of the new deal Upamecano signed this summer, although the presence of a €50m release clause gives them optimism for their future hopes of signing him.
PSG eye Upamecano as the perfect long-term replacement for Thiago Silva, who left to join Chelsea this summer.
Real Madrid join hunting pack
But according to AS, Real Madrid have also entered the race for Upamecano – with the La Liga champions also looking for a defender for the future.
Eder Militao currently provides the competition for Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, but Madrid think Upamecano could be another useful option.
Despite that, the Spaniards do not view the Leipzig defender as their priority for 2021. They are chasing two other French talents first – PSG forward Kylian Mbappe and Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.
However, they are still monitoring Upamecano – as are Bundesliga giants and Champions League holders Bayern Munich.
Hence, if Man Utd really want Upamecano, they will be facing some tough competition.
