Luka Modric has warned Real Madrid team-mate James Rodriguez that leaving the Spanish capital for a move to Manchester United would be a step down in his career.

The attacking midfielder has asked to leave the La Liga champions and is reportedly in talks over a £62million switch to Old Trafford as he looks for regular first-team football.

Chelsea had looked to be favourites to land the Colombia international before United leapt to the front of the queue again, but former Tottenham star Modric has fired a warning to the 25-year-old.

He told Spanish newspaper Marca: “It’s certainly not an easy decision to leave Madrid.

“When you leave here, nothing is the same. You’re at the best club in the world, that’s for sure, and from there you can only go down.

“Everyone will have their reasons. If I continue like this, I will do everything possible to stay, but things in football change fast.”

United are also on the verge of announcing Romelu Lukaku’s £75million move from Everton and if Rodriguez signs too the Red Devils will have added almost £140m worth of attacking talent to Jose Mourinho’s squad.
