Tottenham given huge lift, as Real Madrid to ignore buyback clause

Sergio Reguilon TEAMtalk

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of keeping defender Sergio Reguilon have been given a huge shot in the arm, according to a report from Madrid.

Reguilon arrived from Real Madrid last summer for £28m after impressing during his season-long loan at Sevilla. His form for Spurs this season has been impressive and the Jose Mourinho recruit looks like being a shrewd signing. The fee could rise to £32m with add-ons after Reguilon asserted himself as Spurs’ first-choice left-back.

Real though made sure they had a buy-back option on the deal and the player has previously, somewhat worryingly, admitted he could return.

“Madrid is my home and where I have grown up and they have given me everything. The future is not known but that possibility exists,” he said in November.

The 24-year-old also made it clear it was not his choice to leave Madrid and more the LaLiga club’s decision.

Speaking to Onda Cero, relayed by Libertad Digital, he said: “I’m not in Madrid because it’s something that wasn’t up to me.

“My conscience is very clear. You can’t be frustrated about decisions you don’t get to make. I didn’t get to speak with [Zinedine] Zidane.”

Now though with 31 appearances under his belt, Reguilon has surprisingly been lost off Real’s radar.

Real Madrid, who have been tipped to re-sign him this summer, are having second thoughts, according to Defensa Central via Sport Witness.

The headline from the outlet reads: “Miguel Gutiérrez will close the door on the return of Reguilon”.

Leeds interest in Gutierrez

The Madrid outlet suggest that Real are so happy with the progress of the the 19-year-old Gutierrez that they will abandon their chase for Reguilon.

Gutiérrez has been impressing for the youth team and Real reserve team and was recently called up to the first-team squad.

The homegrown defender has been attracting interest from a number of clubs wanting to take him on loan. Mourinho even tried to sign the youngster while he was at Manchester United, claims the report.

Last month TEAMtalk reported that Leeds United were looking into a move for Gutierrez to support the versatile Stuart Dallas.

However, it appears Madrid have changed their minds over Gutierrez. Now they believe he is a player who has huge potential.

Real have made it clear the youngster is not for sale. An believe he will develop into a better player that Reguilon.

So that spells good news for Tottenham because Gutierrez’s emergence will block Reguilon’s possible return to Madrid.
