Pundit reveals real reason behind Norwich star’s Leeds links

Todd Cantwell

Todd Cantwell’s agent and not the club is the driving force behind a possible move to Leeds United, according to Noel Whelan.

Cantwell, 22, enjoyed a breakthrough season at Norwich City in 2019-2020 but could not prevent relegation for the Canaries. His seven goals from 40 appearances in all competitions turned a few heads and prompted speculation of a move.

Nothing happened on deadline day but the EFL window does not close until October 16. Leeds could still pounce amid reports that they have already offered £15m for the England Under-21 schemer.

Cantwell was omitted from Norwich’s squad for their last two Championship games, fuelling speculation of an exit. However, Whelan, a former Leeds player and lifelong fan, feels it is the player’s representative who is angling for the transfer.

“From what I have heard, was it Cantwell’s agent that was pushing that one? That is what I’ve been hearing on the grapevine,” he told Football Insider. “Leeds might be interested in him, but they weren’t desperate for him. It’s more his agent pushing that one.”

The Whites’ summer recruitment has been praised by many pundits. Manager Marcelo Bielsa has added quality to his ranks, with striker Rodrigo the most high-profile capture from Valencia.

Although just four games in the signs are good, with the Elland Road outfit eighth in the standings with seven points to their name. Cantwell would be another solid signing, with Whelan labelling him a “very good young player”.

It remains to be seen what happens but, at present, it appears as though Bielsa may be happy with what he has.

Raphinha happy to work with Bielsa

New signing Raphinha admits he is excited by the prospect of working with Bielsa at Leeds. Signed on deadline day, the 23-year-old has penned a four-year deal, with Leeds  paying Rennes £15.3m for his services.

The winger racked up some impressive figures while plying his trade in Portugal for Vitoria SC and then Porto. He continued in Ligue 1 and will now hope to set the Premier League on fire with his skills out wide.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has recently praised Bielsa, calling him “the most authentic manager all the time”. And now Raphinha has added his thoughts on the Argentinian tactician and it appears he is more than happy to knuckle down.

“I like working with demanding coaches who can really get the best out of me. It is an absolute pleasure to be here and getting to work with him,” he told LUTV.
