Record Havertz deal to ‘go through in days’ as Bayer send Chelsea warning

Kai Havertz TEAMtalk

Chelsea will reportedly clinch the club-record signing of Kai Havertz next week – but the transfer comes with a fresh warning from Rudi Voller.

The Blues have been one of the most active players in the transfer window thus far.

The arrivals of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have set pulses racing, but the headline attraction may yet still emerge.

Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Havertz has been identified as the man to pull the strings in the Chelsea attack.

The club were described as being ‘incredibly confident’ of being able to seal the deal recently. That’s after a familiar obstacle with Geman players now appears to be out of the way.

Any deal for the player will be on hold until after Bayer Leverkusen’s Europa League campaign comes to an end.

But with Inter Milan lying in wait on Monday, Fabrizio Romano claims that could result in his transfer going through a matter of days after.

He says the fee for Havertz will likely be in the region of £71m. That deal would represent a club-record fee for Chelsea.

However, the Blues have been warned once again that other sides could meet Leverkusen’s asking price, even if they don’t.

Sporting director Voller, speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, is adamant Havertz will not come cheap.

“Havertz? We know that Chelsea are strongly interested in him,” he added.

“But we’ll not sell any player before the end of the Europa League.

“If Chelsea want to sign Kai, they must pay what we ask. No lower price because of Covid-19.”

Speaking last month, Voller has admitted, however, that Havertz probably will depart.

“Maybe I’m too old-fashioned or romantic but for me it is a matter of course that a player ends the season no matter when it ends,” he added.

“There is no discussion at all for me to consider. Could I possibly hurt myself? Or take a little vacation?

“Then some should have withdrawn two months ago.

“Whether it’s the Europa League or the Champions League, if it’s wanted by the player, the host and the club, I couldn’t understand if a player didn’t want to [play].”

Gundogan backs Havertz deal

Kai Havertz

Chelsea’s pursuit of Havertz has been welcomed by Man City star Ilkay Gundogan.

“In my opinion, Havertz is even better than Ballack in terms of his playing ability,” he told SportBild (via Goal).

“Ballack had a certain level of aggression in his game, and a strong mentality.

“He was a top player of the previous generation – a bastard on the pitch, in a positive sense. Kai isn’t like that.”

Regarding Chelsea’s acquisition of feared frontman Werner, Gundogan was equally as impressed. Read more here…
