Chelsea started the better of the two sides and went ahead in the 33rd minute when Drogba superbly lashed home from a tight angle after Jose Reina saved Soloman Kalou’s initial effort.

Liverpool improved in the second half, though, and they levelled in the 64th minute when Torres calmly slotted past Petr Cech following a neat through ball from Yossi Benayoun.

The game went into extra time and, after Michael Essien had a goal disallowed for three Chelsea players offside, Lampard put the hosts ahead from the spot after Sami Hyypia brought down Michael Ballack.

Drogba slotted home from close range to put the Blues on the brink and Ryan Babel’s late goal was no more than a consolation.
