Reid strikes late to~pinch Cats win

Dean Ashton’s chip from the edge of the box struck the post as West Ham started well. But Freddie Ljungberg opened the scoring on 18 minutes when he drilled a shot into the bottom corner from just inside the area, with his strike taking a deflection off Nyron Nosworthy.

But the Black Cats were level on 29 minutes when Kieran Richardson’s left-wing cross was flicked goalwards by Darryl Murphy and Kenwyne Jones tapped home from two yards.

Danny Collins saw a header cleared off the line early in the second half, while Reid curled a free-kick just over.

Murphy then blasted over the bar from 10 yards with the goal gaping.

But Reid earned the points with his last-gasp volley into the bottom corner.
