Jurgen Klopp holds hour-long chat with PSG over managerial role – report

Jurgen Klopp has rejected the opportunity to become PSG boss after reports in France claimed the Liverpool manager recently spent an hour discussing the project with their sporting director Leonardo.

According to Le10Sport, Klopp spoke with Leonardo over the phone as the Ligue 1 giants targeted one of the best in the business as a successor to Thomas Tuchel, who is coming under mounting pressure at the Parc des Princes.

Super-rich PSG reign supreme on the domestic front, but their Qatari bosses want the club to challenge for the Champions League – and it’s claimed Tuchel will be shown the door if he doesn’t achieve that this season.

And with Liverpool a huge 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League and, having won the Champions League trophy last season, Klopp’s stock has arguably never been higher.

As per the report, PSG owners QSI are keen to lure Klopp to Paris and instructed Leonardo to make contact with the German, whereby he was then offered an incredible deal and told of the project on offer in the French capital.

However, the good news for Liverpool is that Klopp, while happy to engage with Leonardo, firmly told him he had no interest in leaving Anfield at the present moment.

Klopp recently extended his contract with the Merseysiders until summer 2024 and told the club’s website at the time: “For me personally this is a statement of intent, one which is built on my knowledge of what we as a partnership have achieved so far and what is still there for us to achieve.

“When I see the development of the club and the collaborative work that continues to take place, I feel my contribution can only grow.

“People see what happens on the pitch as a measure of our progress and although it is the best measure, it’s not the only measure. I have seen the commitment from ownership through to every aspect and function of the club you can think of.

“When the call came in autumn 2015, I felt we were perfect for each other; if anything, now I feel I underestimated that. It is only with a total belief that the collaboration remains totally complementary on both sides that I am able to make this commitment to 2024.

“If I didn’t I would not be re-signing.”

According to report, PSG have also been in contact with former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri over the potential vacancy.

Klopp, meanwhile, is reported to have made the signing of a prolific Nigerian striker one of his transfer priorities in 2020.
