A report in the Daily Mail has revealed why Manchester United starlet Joe Hugill snubbed the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Leeds to head to Old Trafford last summer.

The Red Devils snapped up the then 16-year-old from Sunderland for a fee of just £300,000.

Hugill, now 17, is a centre-forward who is quickly gaining a reputation as a lethal finisher in the Under-23s.

Indeed, in 20 games for the club’s Under-23 and Under-18 sides, Hugill has netted an impressive 16 goals. This included a recent four-goal haul against Liverpool U-23s.

The Mail has revealed that Hugill snubbed the advances of Spurs, Arsenal, Wolves and Leeds before heading to Manchester.

The report states that the reason he chose to join up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side was based on the style of United’s football.

At Sunderland he was playing in a defence-minded set up and wanted to be part of a more attacking side.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville discuss how Manchester United's current defensive line-up compares to previous title-winning sides and what might need to change in the coming months.

Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo both arrived on deadline day last summer, although the later only joined officially in January.

Both players are already making huge strides and pushing for first-team appearances. The end goal is United building a pool of young talent that Solskjaer can pick from.

As for Hugill, the talented forward still has a little way to go before featuring for the first-team. However, if he continues his remarkable form this season, then Solskjaer will certainly be forced to sit up and take notice.
