Reported Arsenal target signs new Napoli contract

Jorginho: Arsenal warned they could face competition for midfielder

Arsenal have suffered a blow after one of their targets in the January transfer window, Jorginho, signed a new deal to keep him at Napoli until 2020.

The midfielder, who turned 24 on Sunday, has established himself as a vital part of Maurizio Sarri’s side during 2015-16 – with his performances leading to interest from Arsene Wenger, who had sent scouts to check on his displays as he bids to bolster his central midfield options.

But Napoli have announced the midfielder has put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half-year deal, meaning Arsenal – who have also been linked with William Carvalho and Ruben Neves -will have to look elsewhere.

“Napoli announce the renewal of the contract with Jorginho until June 30, 2020,” a brief statement on the club’s official website confirmed.

Jorginho was sent off during the 3-1 victory over Atalanta on Sunday, meaning he will miss the clash with Torino on January 6.
