Richarlison unhappy at Man Utd star Cavani over ‘ankle-breaking’ tackle

Everton forward Richarlison claims Edinson Cavani was lucky not to break my ankle after the Manchester United man saw red in Uruguay’s 2-0 defeat to Brazil.

United signed Cavani on deadline day in the recent transfer window, leading to questions about the club’s strategy.

Indeed, the 33-year-old became a free agent in June and so questions arose as to why the Red Devils waited until the final stages of the window to make their move.

Cavani’s prior lack of a club – and pre-season – therefore meant he arrived at Old Trafford without fitness. He has so far made five substitute appearances, scoring in his most recent outing.

He was given chance to build up some match fitness with some game-time for Uruguay on Tuesday evening.

However, Cavani was sent for an early bath on 71 minutes after being shown the first red card of his career. With Uruguay already 2-0 after goals from Arthur and Richarlison, the United star saw red for an ugly lunge on the Everton man.

Richarlison admits that although the tackle could have resulted in a serious injury, he doesn’t think it was deliberate.

He said: “I think it was a ball dispute, he went over the top, if my foot was stuck it might have even broken my ankle, but I think it wasn’t bad.

“He tried to steal the ball and ended up missing the ball.”

Brazil have made a fine start to World Cup 2022 qualifying, with three straight wins placing them top of the South American league.

Richarlison added: “There is always room for improvement. We are not getting arrogant because we’re unbeaten.

“We know that every game is difficult and every game different but we are on the right path. Not because we’ve won but because sometimes we’ve been playing well.

“We are on the right path, though. We have total faith in the coaches and they have faith in us. So we’ll keep looking to achieve our objective, which is to qualify for the World Cup finals.”
