Ferdinand rips into Mourinho as Tottenham boss blasted for two decisions

Rio Ferdinand has blasted Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho for coming up with “a lot of excuses” for his side’s poor run of form.

Spurs were winless in five heading into Tuesday’s second leg of their Champions League last 16 with RB Leipzig and entered that game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor.

Having criticised his lack of options due to injuries to the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Mourinho went on record with further flak aimed at club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele.

Ndombele has struggled for form and fitness this season and went off at half time against the Clarets and the Portuguese boss insisted that the midfielder should be working harder.

Speaking to BT Sport ahead of the clash with Leipzig, Ferdinand opened up on how he believes Mourinho is beginning to lose the Spurs dressing room.

“The manager’s interviews after games will not fill [the players] with confidence,” the pundit said.

“I don’t think so [about Mourinho’s tiredness claim]. There are a lot of excuses.

“He (Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves) has not been coming up with that. Hammer me in the changing room but he’s doing it publicly and losing people.”

Elsewhere, Glenn Hoddle called for Mourinho to come up with a plan to get Spurs out of their current run.

“We have heard all of his excuses. Mourinho needs to come up with something,” he said.

“Communication has failed with [Tanguy] Ndombele. I think there is a player in there.”

Youngster Oliver Skipp was also taken off in the draw with Burnley and Peter Crouch said: “He has given them excuses.

“Taking [Olivier] Skipp and Ndombele off was not great. I don’t think criticising as openly as he has done is great.”

To make matters worse for Tottenham, the club confirmed on Monday that January addition Steven Bergwijn would be ruled out for an “extended period”.
