Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United should turn their attentions to signing a centre-back, amid their continued hunt to bring in Jadon Sancho.
Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho remains United’s top target, despite the deal grounding to a halt. The Bundesliga side are demanding £108million for his sale, a fee the Red Devils deem unrealistic.
Nevertheless, recent reports claim United have submitted a final ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ offer in the hope of tempting Dortmund.
Speaking to talkSPORT, however, Ferdinand insisted that signing Sancho will not solve United’s defensive problems. Those problems were apparent again in United’s chaotic 3-2 win over Brighton on Saturday.
“I’ve been banging the drum for a long time about buying a centre-half,” he said. “It’s not going to solve every problem but it’s one of the biggest problems.
“There’s no dominant centre-half which makes the opposition think, ‘I’m going to have to do something today to get any change out of him’.
“You need that if you’re going to win anything. Jadon Sancho is a generational talent who is here to stay, so you can understand the interest, but for me, they need a centre-back.”
Ferdinand recommends Upamecano snub
Ferdinand added that RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano would be an impressive signing. Leipzig though have insisted that the 21-year-old will be staying in Germany for another season.
“Upamecano is young, good on the ball, athletic, strong, mobile, plays every game. He’s one you can see coming in right now,” Ferdinand said.
“[Kalidou] Koulibaly has been spoken about for two or three years, he might have missed the boat due to his age. There’s no resale value.
“Upamecano is the one who jumps out to me, when I watched the Champions League last year, he was the one who stood out to me.
“If you sign Jadon Sancho, I think you still have the same problems as last season.”
Man Utd rejected chance to sign £27m attacker
Meanwhile, reports elsewhere claim United turned down an exclusive chance to sign Eintracht Frankfurt winger Filip Kostic.
The Serbia international has been in inspired form since his move across Germany in 2018.
And, earlier in the window, United were offered the chance to bring him to Old Trafford, bluntly rejecting the proposition.
