Former Old Trafford star Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United should splash the cash for Jadon Sancho and then give him the prized No.7 shirt worn by David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona.
While speculation continues over United moving for Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and Leicester’s James Maddison, Ferdinand says Sancho should be their first target.
The 20-year-old is enjoying a superb season with Borussia Dortmund and has already made 11 appearances for England, scoring twice.
And Ferdinand has seen enough from the youngster to believe that he can become United’s next big superstar.
Asked if that would mean Sancho wearing the iconic No.7 jersey, former United defender Ferdinand told Radio 5 Live’s 606 Savage Social podcast: “Yes, I would, he’s that type of character.
“He’s got an arrogance about him, it’s what you want on a football pitch, they’d embrace that.
“So yes, I’d give it to him and put that pressure right on his shoulders!”
United would possibly have to fork out £100million or more to land Sancho although prices are hard to gauge with the uncertainty in the transfer market due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
As for Kane – valued as high as £200million in some stories – he doesn’t make the top three in Ferdinand’s list of United priorities.
Naming his preferred trio, the England defender said: “Sancho, Koulibaly and Saul Niguez.
“I think Harry Kane’s been linked but if I’m pushing for an attacking player I’d still go for Sancho, he gives you that little bit of imagination and I think he gives you that little bit of spice that they haven’t got at the moment.”
Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly is also reported to be a target for Liverpool and would command a huge fee while Spanish international Saul would be hard to prise from Atletico Madrid as they see the midfielder as a key part of their plans.
