Rio Ferdinand key to £15m Man Utd move for Norwich ace

Ben Godfrey TEAMtalk

Manchester United have put Norwich’s Ben Godfrey on their wanted list – with help from former Red Devils star Rio Ferdinand.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for defenders this summer as he plans a complete revamp of a United side that has struggled to compete for a top-four spot all season.

Godfrey, who has been linked with Liverpool, is seen as a player United could groom to become a regular after his meteoric rise with the Canaries this season – guiding them to promotion to the Premier League.

The versatile 21-year-old is being championed by former United skipper Ferdinand, who mentors Godfrey in his New Era agency and has been recommending him, according to a report in the Sun on Sunday.

Ferdinand is also on the shortlist to become United’s new director of football and, if he gets the job, that would almost certainly improve Godfrey’s chances of an Old Trafford switch.

Godfrey, who spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury, is believed to be settled at Carrow Road and is not looking for a move – although the lure of a potential move to one of the biggest club’s in world football maybe too good to turn down.

The report goes on to add that Norwich would want about £15million for Godfrey, although that is cheap given the current market for young centre-backs.
