Lewandowski reaches agreement in principle over exciting next move after Bayern Munich

There is an agreement in principle for Barcelona to sign Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, according to reports in Europe.

Lewandowski has established himself as one of the best players in the world in recent years. The Polish striker won the FIFA awards for the best player of the year in 2020 and 2021. But he is yet to receive the Ballon d’Or since it separated from the governing body.

Now 33 years old, Lewandowski is still achieving the kind of numbers that would make him worthy of such a prize. However, there is a growing feeling that he may end his long association with Bayern in order to win it.

He joined them from Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and has gone on to score an astonishing 339 goals in 366 games. As such, his status as a club legend is secure – but his long-term future is in doubt.

Bayern only have Lewandowski under contract for another season after this one ends. He may be exploring his options ahead of one final adventure in his career.

Barcelona was recently named as a potential landing spot for Lewandowski. Things have escalated quickly, since Sport Italia are now talking of an agreement in principle for him to join them.

That is an agreement between Barcelona and Lewandowski – and not Bayern yet.

It would therefore depend on whether a transfer fee can be agreed with Bayern while he is still under contract there. Barcelona are still largely looking at free signings, but would have to spend to snatch Lewandowski – or wait a year.

Lewandowski still an expensive target

It is claimed that it could cost somewhere between €50m and €60m (£41.8m to £50.2m) for the transfer. It is a major outlay for a player of his age, but Lewandowski’s form suggests he is still well worth it.

The former Lech Poznan man believes he could win the Ballon d’Or with Barcelona. Therefore, a move to La Liga for the first time in his career would appeal.

Barca, for their part, want to sign a centre-forward of an elite standard. They added Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal in the winter and his impact has been positive. But he could yet be joined by another.

Links with Borussia Dortmund phenomenon Erling Haaland have been played down due to the costs of the deal. However, they could be looking elsewhere in the Bundesliga by opting instead for Lewandowski.
