Mystery surrounds Tottenham approach for top international manager

Roberto Martinez, Mauricio Pochettino Tottenham v Everton November 2014

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez is reportedly continuing his talks with Tottenham this week, as Spurs look to replace Jose Mourinho.

The north London club sacked Mourinho in April after a poor run of form and a shock Europa League exit. Ryan Mason took interim charge, but his employers want to replace him with a much more experienced manager. Still, Spurs have not had much luck of late in their managerial search.

Julian Nagelsmann will move from RB Leipzig to Bayern Munich in the summer. Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag has agreed a contract extension at Ajax.

As a result, reports have claimed that Martinez features among three names still on Tottenham’s radar.

What’s more, Sky Sports News claims that Spurs are continuing talks with the Spaniard this week.

The ex-Everton manager has also reportedly told friends that he wants to move back into club management after Euro 2020.

Martinez took charge of Belgium in August 2016 and reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018. After losing to France, his side then beat England in the third-place play-off.

As such, he wants one more shot at international glory with the country before going back to domestic football.

According to The Independent, though, Martinez is not in the running and no plans are in place for talks with Tottenham.

Mauricio Pochettino could return to Tottenham, Man Utd are prepared to swap three players for Harry Kane, while Newcastle are determined to keep Arsenal loanee Joe Willock.

Martinez reportedly has ‘admirers’ at Arsenal, who had links with him before appointing his fellow countryman Mikel Arteta in December 2019.

Martinez joined Everton in 2013, but got the sack three years later.

Levy considers Pochettino return

In a more unlikely scenario, The Sun has claimed that Spurs could yet bring Mauricio Pochettino back to the club.

The Argentine was sacked by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy in November 2019 after a sour start to the season.

But while Pochettino moved to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this year, he has supposedly become unhappy in the French capital.
