Robin van Persie urges Man Utd to sign ‘goal machine’ in summer

Robin van Persie has urged Manchester United to sign Edinson Cavani in the summer transfer window.

Cavani wanted to leave current club PSG in January and handed in a transfer request to try to force the move.

United, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid were all chasing the veteran frontman, with the latter known to have been Cavani’s destination of choice.

But the Uruguayan ended up staying at Parc des Princes, as no club met PSG’s £17million (€20m) valuation.

Cavani is almost certain to leave in the summer, however, once his contract expires after June 30.

And former Red Devils frontman Van Persie believes United should not waste any time in trying to sign the experienced star.

Asked during a Twitter Q&A who United should sign in the summer, Van Persie replied: “Edinson Cavani, brilliant player and available #GoalMachine.”

The 32-year-old is PSG’s all-time top goalscorer with 198 goals in 293 appearances, having arrived in the French capital from Napoli in 2013.

Having missed out on Cavani, United ended up signing former Watford striker Odion Ighalo on loan until the end of the season, but they are expected to be in the market for a new frontman in the summer.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan are reportedly ready to open new contract talks with Lautaro Martinez in a bid to raise his exit clause beyond the €111million mark.

The striker emerged as a January transfer window target for Manchester United and Barcelona, but now Inter are hoping to fend off any summer bids by upping the player’s release clause, according Mundo Deportivo.

The 22-year-old has a contract with the Serie A giants until 2023, but there is a two-week window in July where he can leave for €111m, if that price is met.

But Inter are desperate to keep the player and are willing to improve Martinez’s contract substantially in order to hike the price of any potential exit. Read more…
