Rudiger explains how he ‘did his bit’ to get Werner to sign for Chelsea

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger says he spoke at length to Timo Werner during the coronavirus lockdown in a bid to convince him to move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues announced the impending arrival of RB Leipzig striker Werner last Thursday.

Liverpool also wanted the attacker but the Reds eventually refused to pay his £50million release clause and Chelsea, who did not spend in January following last summer’s transfer ban, swooped in.

Reports also claimed Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp spoke via video call to Werner about life at Anfield.

However Rudiger – who has a long-term friendship with his fellow German Werner – has revealed he also did the same.

“I did speak to him before because we have known each other for a long time,” Rudiger told Chelsea’s official website.

“We spoke a lot during the lockdown and he told me he was interested in coming to England. Of course then I did my bit, what I had to do.”

Rudiger also declared his excitement about seeing Werner fit in under Frank Lampard’s new-look attack.

“Like everyone, I’m very excited that he’s chosen Chelsea and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“I’ve known him since he was 17 and he did very good in the past few years. He can be very important for us.”

Chelsea have also signed Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech, who scored eight goals and assisted 21 others this season.

Reports say the Blues also want Brentford winger Said Benrahma in what would be a hat-trick of attacking deals for the club.

Christian Pulisic Chelsea TEAMtalk

Chelsea returned to action on Sunday with a come-from-behind win against Aston Villa away from home.

The victory was the Blues’ first Premier League win on the road in 2020.

Substitute Christian Pulisic inspired his side to victory and the American winger has also expressed his excitement about Werner.

He said: “We already have a really strong team with very good players.

“To add guys like [Werner] is incredible. We’re focused on this season right now but we’re also excited for what’s to come.”
