Ryan Giggs believes Alex Telles is the perfect antidote to Manchester United’s lack of goals from the full-back area, comparing the left-back to two Liverpool stars.
Telles made his United debut at left wing-back in Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
Indeed, with Luke Shaw deployed in a back three, the Brazilian had onus to cause problems further forward. Telles impressed and proved to be a handful for PSG right-back Alessandro Florenzi.
Speaking after the game, Giggs explained how his impact going forward could be similar to that shown by Liverpool pair Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.
The Reds duo are Jurgen Klopp’s main source of creativity from either flank, with fantastic crossing ability.
“With Telles, that’s something we’ve been missing,” Giggs told the Webby & O’Neill podcast.
“You look at Trent, Robertson, the goals they provide. Now, full-backs have to have that in their armour.
“They have to be like that, if the wingers are coming in, the full-backs have to create the width and make goals.
“It looks like he might have that extra dimension as well with creating goals.”
Giggs puzzled by Van de Beek problems
Giggs also admitted that Donny van de Beek should have more of a say for game time, given his immediate impressions.
The Dutch midfielder has added a further dose of creativity to United since his arrival, scoring on his debut against Crystal Palace.
However he has suffered from limited chances, something Giggs cannot understand.
“I think with Van de Beek, it’s how does he get in the team?” he said.
“When he’s come on, he’s impressed, he always looks like he’s got a goal in him. He scored for Holland during the international break.”
Man Utd, Chelsea set to clash
United had Marcus Rashford to thank on Tuesday, his second-half strike restoring the club’s lead in Paris.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men play again on Saturday, in a crunch Premier League clash with Chelsea.
Solskjaer has a fantastic record against the Blues as United boss, aside from July’s FA Cup semi-final defeat.
